How the daily quiz works

Key Questions is a daily quiz of ten multiple-choice questions that takes about three minutes. Round 1 is Around Australia, four questions. Round 2 is The wide world, three questions. Round 3 is the day's theme, three more. The first question is an easy one and they get harder as you go. Tap an answer and it locks in: one answer per question, no take-backs. A right answer lights up cyan. A wrong one shows you the right answer instead.

After every question you get a one-line explanation and the source it came from, so you leave knowing a little more than you walked in with. There is no timer and no speed bonus. Pull the brass lever on the stage (or press N, the right arrow or Enter) for the next question.

Scoring, hints and the streak

Your score is the number you got right out of ten. Hints never lower it. Press Consult the Locksmith before you answer and he rules out one wrong option; press again and he rules out a second. He will never rule out more than two, and it costs you nothing. Your share card marks a right answer you took help on with a half-filled dot, which is information for friends, not a penalty.

The day counts toward your streak once you have answered all ten, whatever the score. One spare key covers a single missed day and comes back after seven days.

Tips for a better score

  • Read the theme on the start card. It narrows the last three questions before you see them.
  • Watch for superlatives. "Southernmost", "oldest" and "only" make a question much easier than it looks.
  • Rule out first. Even a guess is better after you have crossed off two of the four.
  • If you are torn between two, take the hint. It costs nothing, and the explanation afterwards is worth reading either way.
  • Take your time. There is no timer and no speed bonus, so reading a question twice is free.
  • Read all four options before you press. One answer per question means no take-backs.

What makes Key Questions different

Four of every ten questions are about Australia, with Australian spelling and Australian facts, and every answer carries its source. The quiz also looks like nothing else on your phone: a miniature brass theatre with velvet curtains, ten bulbs along the arch (one per question), and four heavy push buttons that sink when you press them. After question ten the bulbs chase round the arch, the curtains part on your score and the Locksmith tips his bowler. It needs no sign-in, runs in the browser, works with a keyboard (1 to 4, or A to D) and a screen reader, and drops back to a flat 2D stage on older devices.

A new quiz at your midnight

Everyone gets the quiz for their own local date, so a fresh ten arrives at midnight wherever you are. Answer order is the same for every player on the day, so two friends who both take a hint lose the same wrong option, and you can compare fairly. The share card shows your score and your marks, never a question or an answer.
